Usage Notes
- China's administrative divisions are organized into several types:
- 4 Municipalities (直辖市) - directly under central government control
- 22 Provinces (省) - standard provincial administrative regions
- 5 Autonomous Regions (自治区) - regions with large ethnic minority populations
- 2 Special Administrative Regions (特别行政区) - Hong Kong and Macau
- All codes follow the format 'CN-' followed by two letters
- Municipalities have provincial-level status in China's administrative hierarchy
- The autonomous regions have the same political status as provinces but with more legislative rights
- Special Administrative Regions (Hong Kong and Macau) operate under the "One Country, Two Systems" principle
Special Cases
- The four municipalities (Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Chongqing) are directly administered by the central government
- Hong Kong (CN-HK) and Macau (CN-MO) maintain separate political and economic systems
- Taiwan (CN-TW) is listed for completeness but its political status is subject to international dispute
Data Usage
- When specifying locations in China in your API requests, please use these exact codes
- For addresses in Special Administrative Regions, use their specific codes (CN-HK or CN-MO)
- Consider regional differences in address formats, particularly for Special Administrative Regions
Note: Taiwan's inclusion in this list is for technical completeness and follows ISO standards. Its political status is subject to different interpretations internationally.
