Usage Notes

  • Mexico is divided into 31 states and 1 federal entity
  • All codes follow the format 'MX-' followed by the traditional state abbreviation
  • Administrative divisions:
    • 31 states (estados)
    • 1 federal entity (entidad federativa)
  • The Federal Entity:
    • Ciudad de México (MX-CMX)
    • Has special status as the national capital
    • Was formerly known as Distrito Federal (DF)
    • Is commonly referred to as CDMX
    • Is not part of any state
  • Notable States:
    • Estado de México (MX-MEX) is distinct from Ciudad de México
    • Some states have full official names that include historical figures (e.g., Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave)
  • When specifying locations in Mexico in your API requests, please use these exact codes for the state or federal entity
  • All state names retain their proper Spanish spelling with diacritical marks (e.g., Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Yucatán)
