Usage Notes

  • The Marshall Islands is organized into two main chains and 24 municipalities:
    • 2 Island Chains (Ralik and Ratak)
    • 24 Legislative Districts (Municipalities/Atolls)
  • All codes follow the format 'MH-' followed by:
    • A single letter for chains (L or T)
    • Three letters for municipalities
  • The two chains are:
    • Ralik Chain (MH-L): The western island chain
    • Ratak Chain (MH-T): The eastern island chain

Geographic Organization

  • The country consists of 29 coral atolls and 5 single islands
  • Municipalities are distributed between the two main chains:
    • Ralik Chain (Sunset Chain) in the west
    • Ratak Chain (Sunrise Chain) in the east
  • Majuro (MH-MAJ) serves as the capital and largest city

Administrative Structure

  • Each municipality generally consists of several islands within an atoll
  • Some municipalities are single-island districts
  • Kwajalein (MH-KWJ) hosts a U.S. military base
  • Majuro (MH-MAJ) is the most populous municipality and administrative center

Data Usage

  • When specifying locations in the Marshall Islands in your API requests, please use these exact codes
  • Consider that some municipalities may use traditional Marshallese spellings
  • Municipality codes are unique and should not be confused with the chain codes
  • For general regional queries, chain codes (MH-L, MH-T) can be used
